Supermicro X9DRL-iF, X9DRL-EF, X9DRL-3F & X9DRL-7F inside the CSE-825 chassis - In our video we will review the Supermicro X9DRL family of motherboards, and specifically focus on Memory and Processors. We will discuss the different types of memory, speeds and sizes. We will go over max memory configuration capabilities. We will demonstrate how to install and configure the RAM with some best practice tips and tricks along the way. Along with memory, we will provide a simple overview regarding the compatible processors, and which CPUs we recommend for low end and high end applications. The Supermicro X9DRL family of motherboards are ATX boards. They are not proprietary and can be utilizes in multiple chassis styles such as rackmounts or towers. Let's start this discussion with the compatible RAM options. Regardless of which type of motherboard - X9DRL-iF, X9DRL-EF, X9DRL-3F & X9DRL-7F all utilize the exact same memory and CPUs. From this point forward, I will refer to X9DRL-iF or X9DRL family of motherboards, but please keep in mind that all the same information pertains to the -EF, -3F and -7F. There are 8 DIMM slots operating on DDR3 memory. Several different speeds options are supported: 1066MT/s, 1333MT/s, 1600MT/s or 1866MT/s. Memory DIMM capacity sizes supported include: 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB or even 64GB. There are 3 types of compatible memory: ECC Registered (RDIMM), ECC Load Reduced (LRDIMM) and ECC Unbuffered (server UDIMM). We view ECC Unbuffered as wasteful spending with limited scalability. We recommend ECC Registered server memory for lower DIMM sizes such as 2GB, 4GB, 8GB or 16GB and Load Reduced server memory for higher DIMM sizes such as 32GB or 64GB. Desktop memory is not supported. The max configuration for Supermicro X9DRL-iF motherboard with ECC Registered is 256GB via 8 x 32GB DDR3 1600MT/s ECC Registered server memory. Whereas, Load Reduced Server memory will have twice the capacity! You can get 512GB on your Supermicro X9DRL-iF with 8 x 64GB DDR3 1600MT/s ECC Load Reduced server memory.

Now let's chat about the processors. There are two CPU sockets, which are an LGA2011 sockets. This means they are exclusively running on Intel processors and AMD would not be compatible. You can use a couple different types of Intel processor series with the Supermicro X9DRL-iF family of motherboards. Intel Xeon E5-2600 V1 or V2 series. Cloud Ninjas recommends E5-2660v2 and E5-2670v2 and E5-2690v2. There are a number of great options, we recommend using V2's since they are relatively inexpensive nowadays. The X9DRL-iF motherboard is an excellent option for virtualization or as a homelab server.
