The Dell PowerEdge R540 server operates on DDR4 memory. There are a total of 16 DIMM slots with 12 memory channels. The layout of the memory channels is a little strange when compared to other systems. Four of the memory channels controlled by CPU 1 have two DIMM slots while the other two channels only consist of one DIMM slot. For CPU 2, all six memory channels consist of one DIMM slot. Module speed options include 2133MT/s, 2400MT/s, and 2666MT/s. You can also put in 2933MT/s and 3200MT/s modules, but they will clock down to 2666MT/s. Module capacity options include: 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB. The R540 accepts two types of RAM: ECC Registered (RDIMM) and Load Reduced (LRDIMM). The max configuration that can be achieved by the R540 is 1TB (1024GB) with 16 64GB RDIMMs or LRDIMMs.
