Turning a Custom Shifter Knob & Tapping a Threaded Insert - Woodturning [Walnut Burl]

This project was a practice piece for a commission for a few custom walnut burl gear shift knobs for a Studebaker M5 truck. Since it was my first shifter knob, and first time threading aluminum, I wanted to give my process a test drive, as well as try out the wood and make sure I let it dry enough.

I couldn't find any threaded inserts that I liked, so I decided to tap my own from aluminum rod. This knob needed a 3/8" x 24tpi insert, but if you decide to make your own, check the thread pattern first. Aluminum is soft enough to work with woodturning tools, so all you really need is the right tap and proper size drill bit. Just keep the lathe spinning slowly while you drill and tap it by hand with the lathe stopped.

For the finish, I used CA glue (try Starbond - 10% off code: CEWW) and MicroMesh (to 12,000 grit) to give it a durable gloss. Then I polished it with Shellawax.

If you need CA glue, give Starbond a try! One reason I like Starbond is they send you two application tips, plus some little detail tips and a needle plug with each bottle. It all makes for more efficient and clean use of the entire bottle of glue!

---- Attention ----
Please note, my videos are for entertainment only. They are simply demonstrations and are NOT intended to be instructional. Proper training and experience are essential before attempting to use any woodworking equipment. Do not attempt projects or techniques that are beyond your skill level or your comfort level! Serious accidents can happen in an instant and bandaging wounds or sitting in an emergency room is much less fun than woodturning. You are always responsible for your own safety. The only rules are: 1) Be careful; 2) Have fun.
