AUTOSAR | AUTOSAR Layered Architecture | AUTOSAR Layers | ASW | RTE | BSW | MCAL | ECU Abstraction
The AUTOSAR (Automotive Open System Architecture) Classic Platform is structured into three main software layers that sit above the hardware: the Application Layer, the Runtime Environment (RTE), and the Basic Software (BSW). This modular design decouples application functions from the underlying hardware, allowing software to be reused across different vehicle platforms:
Application Layer: Contains hardware-independent software components (SWCs) for vehicle functions like braking or engine control, Airbag control etc
Run-Time Environment (RTE): Acts as a middleware that facilitates communication between the Application Layer and the Basic Software, as well as between different SWCs.
Basic Software (BSW): Provides standard services like network management, memory, and diagnostics, abstracting the microcontroller hardware
MCAL- Microcontroller Abstraction Layer
* Make upper software layer independent of microcontroller (MCU).
* Software module that directly accesses on-chip microcontroller (MCU) peripheral modules and external devices that are mapped to memory.
ECU Abstraction Layer :
* ECUAL sits between the Microcontroller Abstraction Layer (MCAL) and Service Layer within the Basic Software (BSW),
* providing hardware-independent, standardized APIs for accessing peripherals (sensors, actuators, memory) regardless of their physical location.
* It enables software portability, simplifies development, and separates application logic from specific ECU hardware layout
Complex Device Drivers- CDD
* Layer used for complex functions not found on other layers.
* This layer accesses the microcontroller (MCU) directly.
* Fulfills special functions and timing requirements needed to operate complex sensors and actuators.
Services Layer:-
* AUTOSAR OS
* Memory service (NVRAM management)
* Diagnostic service
* Communication Services
* Network Management Services
