Wing Chun at Home Drill: A "How To" Solo Training Exercise (Great for Beginners!)
Remember Bruce Lee's quote: "I fear not the man you has practiced 10,000 kicks once. I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times." Well that's exactly what it takes to get good at Wing Chun... practicing one specific exercise over and over again.
Here's a very specific Wing Chun at Home solo training exercise called "Switching Kwan Saos" you can drill on your own that will create the ability to rolll out of pressure.
Basically, this Wing Chun solo drill turns the tables on an opponent who ties your up and smothers you in a tight spot.
And when you practice this solo exercise at home over and over again, it creates (within you) the specific muscle memory to use your opponent's forward pressure against them.
Also, the Switching Kwan Sao drill Wing Chun at home exercise is great to train for Wing Chun beginners who feel like they always fight force against force and don't exactly know how to stop struggling with an opponent.
--------
So are ready for one Wing Chun solo training drill you can train at home to make you better at handling pressure and get out of tight spots? First you need to know the Kwan Sao. I call it "the table turner" because it takes you from a position of weakness immediately to a position of strength. And when you know how to switch (roll) from one kwan sao to the next kwan sao, you know the exactly how to move to keep them constantly guessing and off balance.
:: PART 1 ::
First, I'll answer the question... "What is a Kwan Sao?" by showing how it is made up of a Tan Sao and a Bong Sao. I'll also detail the footwork and where the weight needs to be for training the switching kwan sao drill at home.
Next, I'll help you understand how the switching kwan sao action of "rolling out" to the other side deflects their pressure away from you while putting you into a favorable position.
I've also made sure to give a very clear picture of how to solo train this drill on your own, especially the rolling action so you can practice it at home correctly.
Next is my at home practice recommendation of 50 Switching Kwan Saos (trained once per day at home).
:: PART 2 ::
Next, I show how the Switching Kwan Sao drill is used / applied. I talk about how your arms may feel tied up (or surrounded) by an opponent and how you roll to the outside with your bong sao.
Then I show you how its applied with a partner to give you perspective for training this Wing Chun drill on your own at home.
:: PART 3 ::
Feeling pressure during Solo Training
The last part of this Wing Chun at home video gives ways to feel pressure without a partner.
