Primitive Water Bottle and Henequen in Mexico
The calabash bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria) has been cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions of the world for thousands of years. The vine produces a large fruit that when mature can be made into a durable water-tight canteen. In this video I find henequen plants (Agave fourcroydes) growing on a beach in Yucatan, Mexico and I proceed to make cordage from the fibers. The following day I have a calabash gourd and begin the process of cutting it open using a stone while sitting on the top of the ruins of a Mayan temple near the town of Ixil in Yucatan, Mexico. The day was coming to an end so I left the sacred place and one week later I finished making my new canteen by a stream not far from my Hut in California. I used the henequen cordage to make a net to facilitate carrying the bottle gourd.
