Fatal Fury 3 Retrospective - The Return of Geese Howard's Revenge

This video is the fifth chapter in the Game Hero History of Terry Bogard and a retrospective of the classic SNK Fighting game, Fatal Fury 3: Road to the Final Victory.
This video picks up the story of the Fatal Fury franchise where Fatal Fury 2 left off. It also marks the point where the franchise as a whole starts to take on more super natural elements for its story telling.

Fatal Fury 3 has a convoluted story plot that revolves around ancient scrolls of immortality which are used to explain the return of Terry Bogard's old nemesis, Geese Howard. The return of Geese prompts Terry to return to south town and sets off a new adventure for our titular hero where he gets revenge on Geese once again and thwarts two ancient demon warlords from using the ancient scrolls of immortality to resurrect themselves... I told you fighting game lore gets really wacky, and this is only chapter 5!

Fatal Fury 3 also has the cleanest game play seen from the Fatal Fury Franchise thus far in the series. It's combat speed, combo potentials, and the introduction of the three lane over sway system separated it from any of the other games in the franchise, despite it's roster being very limiting when compared to even other SNK titles at the time.

The biggest change to Terry Bogard in this game is that he no longer has his rising tackle special technique and it has instead been replaced by his new move, the power dunk. Terry's also really mad in this game, whether its because Geese is back, he's annoyed by the secret subplot scrolls, or he just feels like the writing staff is doing nothing for his kayfabe character development is unclear.

This game also serves as the origin story for how Terry Bogard became Rock Howard's sensei and adoptive father, spoilers... it's not as deep or meaningful as you'd probably want it to be.

The series details Terry's entire gaming career with a chapter dedicated to each game that he appears in, except for the ones that I couldn't actually play myself. Terry Bogard is easily one of my top 5 favorite video game heroes and producing this series has been a lot of fun!
