Metallica Reveals Which Song They Won’t Be Playing Live
Few songs in metallica’s catalog has been more divisive than the track Escape which appeared on teh group’s second album, 1984’s Ride the Lightning. The band would admit themselves that they are not fans of the tune having only played it live once during their career, a performance at the 2012 orion fest where the band played Ride The Lightning in it’s entirety. frontman James Hetfield told the crowd ““Do you know what song is next? Don’t say it out loud, please! The song that we never wanted to play live, ever… is now on the set list,” “We’re not afraid, we’re just hoping it’s good. We’ll do our best.”
Well the song was in the news again as a tiktoker named shotokanguitarist posted a video of himself listening to ride the lightning with the caption saying
: "Listening to Metallica's Escape after many, many years of skipping it." In the caption he added the question: “Is Metallica's Escape better than I remember it?” Surprisingly, Metallica’s own verified TikTok account replied to the video ‘No It Isn’t.’
Hetfield discussed the song during an interview in 2017 with Sopita’s where he revealed
“That was the first time we wrote a song in the studio actually in the studio. I remember we had all the songs and tehre lars said they want us to record one more. They need one more for the album. You didn’t tell me that, so now we have to record a song, so we had to write and it was really last minute so escape was one of those songs written in the studio.
The song soon got a folklore that the members of Metallica hated the track, something drummer Lars Ulrich discussed in a 2016 interview with loudersound saying “It’s become folklore… but it’s not true!” “We thought of it in the spirit of Iron Maiden’s Run To the Hill or Judas Priest’s Living After Midnight – dare I use the words ‘radio songs’? So instead of turning it into an eight minute Seek And Destroy type of thing, we kept it on the short side. Then it got a bad rap, and I don’t know why. I don’t have a particular problem with it, but it never became a live staple like the other songs on the record. It just goes to show that you’re better off not trying to do things on purpose.”
Metallica are currently on their M72 tour where they are playing two shows in each city and doing no repeat setlists, but i doubt we’ll be seeing escape played anytime soon despite what fans online are requesting. Some of the commenters on social media are requesting the band to play it with one going as far as saying Escape is better than anything on the band’s latest record 72 Seasons. Let me know your thoughts on Escape in the comments section below.
