Program Notes:
“Alexsandra Pakhmutova, born in 1929, is a Soviet and Russian composer. Her career is notable for her success in a range of different genres including compositions for symphony orchestra, the ballet Illumination, music for children, and songs and music for over a dozen different movies. Pakhmutova’s Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra was written as an homage to Rachmaninaff and Prokofiev. In 1956, the piece was first performed by Ivon Pavlov and the Symphony Orchestra of the Moscow State Philharmonic Society conducted by Eugene Svetlanov. In 1978, Timofei Dokshitzer discovered the work and led to a substantial resurgence of the popularity of the work leading to changes to the work made by Pakhmutova.”
