BEST Midportion Achilles Tendinopathy Exercises - Alfredson Protocol
Midportion achilles tendinopathy is characterised by progressive pain and decreased function of the Achilles tendon. A popular exercise protocol focuses on progressive heavy-load eccentric strengthening exercises, based on Alfredson’s protocol classic heel-drop exercise programme.
It is thought that eccentric exercise affects type 1 collagen production, increasing tendon volume and tensile strength. Eccentric exercise may alter neovascularisation and accompanying nerve ingrowth associated with this condition.
