Shinsui: Growing Asian Pear In Your Own Backyard (Part 2) - Planting Fruit Trees & Gardening w/Aiman
This is a 2nd part in the Series about Growing Asian Pear in your own backyard. In the previous part, Aiman gave us a general overview of the Asian Pear. In this part, Aiman provides a more detail information about SHINSUI, the 1st of the 9 varieties of asian pears his dad planted in their backyard.
VARIETY: SHINSUI
MATURITY DATE: AUGUST 15
FRUIT: ORANGE-BROWN RUSSETT, CRISP OFF-WHITE FLESH, VERY JUICY AND SWEET
TREE: PRECOCIOUS, UPRIGHT & VIGOROUS
DESCRIPTION:
Shinsui is now the earliest Asian pear variety that we planted, harvesting mid-August before Shinseiki. Medium-size fruit with crisp off-white flesh. Skin finishes with a beautiful orange-yellow-brown russet. This variety is very juicy, very sweet and has an excellent and outstanding flavor for the early season. Tree growth is upright and vigorous. Moderately susceptible to fire blight. Precocious and very productive
Very juicy and very sweet. Green-brown to orange-brown russet skin. Very vigorous tree with upright, erect growth. Early harvest. Storage life is approx. 6 weeks. Very good to excellent quality for an early season fruit. Storage life about 1 to 2 months. High sugar content.
What are Asian Pears?
Apple-Pears, some folks call them, or Pear-Apples. Asian pears are often called apple pears because they are crisp like an apple, but have a pear-like flavor and aroma. Some say Salad Pears, because some varieties blend so nicely into salads.
However, Asian pears make up a unique group, really quite unlike either apples or European pears. Many of them are shaped like apples; at first glance, Chojuro might masquerade as a Golden Russet apple. Asian pears are typically very crisp, very juicy, very sweet, and very low acid. Most Nashi (Japanese for pear) reach peak flavor ripened on the tree; even with prolonged storage, they do not attain the buttery texture of many European pears.
Unlike European pears, which are picked from trees before they mature, Asian pears are left to ripen fully on the tree. Depending on what part of the country you live in, harvest can begin as early as mid-July or as late as early October. The best way to tell when the pears are ready is to taste one.
While slightly exotic, they are relatively easy to grow. Most trees cultivated for home gardens are dwarf varieties that reach only 8' to 15' tall. Popular types include Shinseiki, Atago, Kosui, Hosui, Niitaka, Yoinashi, Shinsui, Korean Giant and Shinko.
These are the 9 varieties that Aiman's planted in his backyard orchard 4 years ago. He started with 3 trees, but after seeing and tasting the fruits only one year after planting, he decided to plant 12 more trees during the subsequent years. Thus far, only 1 tree had died. The trees were bought bare-rooted from Adams Country nursery, a very popular nursery in Pennsylvania.
