40 Hands-On Flet Tutorial: use_state for Interactive UI with Dropdowns and Objects PYTH 9.04
All the code used in this video is free and downloadable at https://industry-python.thinkific.com - Free registration required.
In this hands-on Flet tutorial, we learn how to use use_state to make a Python UI truly interactive. We start with a dropdown menu that already exists but does not yet change anything on screen, then incrementally add state so the UI reacts to user input.
You will work step by step through:
Reviewing a dropdown that selects objects (not strings)
Storing application state with ft.use_state
Managing selected objects using a dictionary of character instances
Updating state inside a dropdown selection handler
Rendering dynamic UI elements based on state changes
Displaying images and character attributes (skill, luck, stamina)
Structuring layouts with Column and Row for clear visual hierarchy
This tutorial emphasizes practical Python concepts, including object-oriented design, keyword-only parameters, and clean state updates, all within a simple but engaging Flet application.
By the end, selecting a character from the dropdown updates the image and stats on screen in real time. In the next video, we’ll take a deeper dive into ft.use_state and show how to use component state to fully control your Flet UI behavior.
