Don’t go to Venice for the food; go for the views!
Don’t go to Venice for the food; go for the views! If I sound a bit cynical, sorry. I’ve been living in Rome for a while, and no matter how fluent I become in Italian, I’m often still treated like a tourist. And when I go to touristy locations like Venice, I expect it to be like that.
• It’s super crowded and touristy, all the time. There really is no “off season” like there used to be. But this day actually wasn’t that bad. 🤳
• Food here is veryyyyy expensive. I’m sure there’s good restaurants, but I wasn’t about to spend 30 Euro for some pasta. I live in Rome, surrounded by great Italian food every day. So seeing these menus and prices really felt like a rip off. If I could do this day over, I would have packed my own lunch and sat my happy self down in some piazza to eat a picnic. 🧺
• The pizza was “overpriced and disappointing” because I LIVE IN ROME where I can get a mouthwatering, authentic Roman pizza for 5 euros. This pizza was like cardboard for 11 euros. So, I meant what I said. 🍕
• Expect the main sites to be filled with people. Ignore the people. Look up. It’s so pretty. 👀
• Aperol Spritz originated here, but a lot of places just pour the store-bought canned version into a glass and charge you 7.50 for it. Terrible. Anywhere else in Italy, you can find a good aperol spritz (or try the Hugo!) and it should come with little snacks, like chips and olives. 🍹🫒
• You’re gonna do a lot of walking. This day easily clocked over 20,000 steps. And I had to carry a very heavy backpack filled with cameras and gear. Wear comfy shoes and try to pack light. I felt so bad for all the people dragging strollers up and down the stairs of the all the bridges. What a workout! 👟👟
Have you ever been to Venice? What did you think?❓
