Sam Altman's New Startup 'World' Just Launched in the US: Eye Scans, Crypto & AI – Explainify

Have you heard of Sam Altman’s new startup called World?

Yes, the same Sam Altman who’s the CEO of OpenAI has just launched his company in the US, and it’s all about proving you're human—literally.

World, formerly known as WorldCoin, believes that soon we won't be able to tell humans apart from AI online. So, they’ve come up with a solution called World ID — a unique digital ID that proves you're a real person.

How does it work?

It all starts with a device called the Orb. It looks like a shiny, sci-fi ball, but what it does is scan your retina — yes, your eyeball — to confirm that you’re human.

Once scanned, you get a World ID. The company says the scan is private. Your actual eye image isn’t saved — only a numerical code that represents your scan.

And there's more. After creating a World ID, you also get free crypto — WorldCoin — which you can store and use in their app, the World App. You can send it, save it, or even withdraw it.

World actually started back in 2023 and found popularity in countries like Kenya, Indonesia, and even India. But until now, it hadn’t launched in the US.

Why? Mainly because of the strict crypto rules in the US. But with Donald Trump back in the White House, the crypto landscape has changed, opening the door for World’s launch in San Francisco.

They’ve even introduced the Orb Mini — a smaller, smartphone-shaped version of the original Orb that does the same job but is portable.

Still, the project isn’t without controversy.

Countries like Kenya, Portugal, Spain, Hong Kong, and Brazil have raised privacy concerns about the biometric data being collected. In fact, World was temporarily banned in many of those places.

South Korea even fined the company close to a million dollars for mishandling personal data.

So while World promises to keep your data private, many experts are still skeptical.

The big question now is — would you scan your eye to prove you’re human online? Or is that a step too far?
