What happened in Trump, Zelenskyy and European leaders meetings.

A highly anticipated meeting took place in Washington this week as President Donald Trump welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several top European leaders to the White House.

The talks came just days after Trump’s summit in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which failed to produce a ceasefire. With so much at stake, many hoped this new round of discussions could lay the groundwork for peace.

At the Oval Office, Trump described the meeting as “very good,” while European leaders like French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz all sounded optimistic. But behind the positive tone, no concrete commitments were reached.

One of the biggest developments was Trump saying he has begun arranging direct talks between Putin and Zelenskyy. According to Trump, the idea is first a one-on-one meeting between the two leaders, followed by a trilateral summit involving the United States. The Kremlin later confirmed Trump and Putin spoke by phone for about 40 minutes after the meeting.

Security guarantees for Ukraine were also discussed. Zelenskyy revealed plans are on the table for Kyiv to purchase around $90 billion worth of American weapons, with European funding helping to make it possible. Another part of the conversation focused on Ukraine building its own drones—some of which the United States could later buy. But again, nothing was signed.

The sharpest disagreement came when the topic of a ceasefire was raised. Trump maintained his view that a ceasefire isn’t necessary right now, arguing that peace talks should take place first. European leaders pushed back strongly. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said, “I can’t imagine the next meeting happening without a ceasefire,” stressing that pressure must be applied on Moscow.

Another sensitive issue was the future of Ukrainian territory. Zelenskyy reportedly discussed a map with Trump showing Russian-occupied areas. But NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte insisted that redrawing borders was not formally discussed, leaving that question for any potential future talks between Kyiv and Moscow.

In the end, the White House meeting was long on symbolism but short on binding agreements. For now, the world is left waiting to see whether Trump’s push for a Putin-Zelenskyy meeting can finally deliver what countless talks before have failed to achieve: a path to ending the war.
