Biggest Community Kitchen---Sikh Golden Temple in Amritsar: A Table for 60,000 documentary
"A Table for Sixty-Thousand" tells the inspiring story of how 60,000 free meals are prepared and served each day at the historic "Golden Temple" (Shri Harmandir Sahib) in Amritsar, India where, for over 400 years, the Sikh practice of Langar, Free Community Kitchen, has ensured that good nutrition is a basic human right.
At the Golden Temple everyday (as of 2017 the average is 100,000) vegetarian meals are prepared and shared by the community. Anyone from anywhere in the world can participate in the preparation, cooking, serving, and sharing of the meal. The meal is prepared through the practical concept of seva (voluntary service of labor, material resources and, most importantly, companionship). Seva is a tenet of Sikhism and is done not as a charity, but as a tool to enhance and express one's own true worth.
This documentary by Teresa and Jasprit Singh is based on over five years of studying Langar at Shri Harmindir Sahib.
It provides a glimpse of why volunteers come, how the food is acquired and how it is prepared and served.
The film also attempts to draw out the Best Practices of Langar, providing lessons that may be helpful for other organizations interested in food-related issues and, in general, for other community-building efforts.
-humbly submitted by Teresa and Jasprit Singh with Thanks to all who participated in this seva project.
