In my 10 years of traveling the world, few places have left as big of an impression on me than India. This is a truly beautiful and remarkable country, filled with loving, warm, and friendly people, a stunning and fascinating culture, and some of the best food anywhere on Earth. There are profound experiences to be had at nearly every turn here, and I had one of my own when I visited the Golden Temple in Amritsar with my travel buddy Sam and our new friend Deepak.

On day two of our time in Amritsar, I knew I wanted to visit the Golden Temple, also known as Darbar Sahib or Sri Harmandir Sahib. Amritsar is a holy city for those who practice the Sikh religion, and the more than 400-year-old Golden Temple is the most significant shrine for Sikhs in the world. The temple welcomes people of all faiths and walks of life. Everyone is considered equal here. It is also home to the biggest free kitchen in the world, which is open 24 hours a day! Come along with me, Sam, and Deepak as we experience the beauty and wonders of The Golden Temple!

You have to wear proper attire when you go to the Golden Temple, so my first order of business was buying a shirt at a nearby shop for 700 rupees. Then I chose an orange turban. You can rent a turban here, but I decided to buy mine for 300 rupees. Getting my head wrapped was such a relaxing experience. It was almost like getting a head massage! I also bought a bracelet to complete my look. Just call me David Singh!

On our way to the temple, we passed a Jallianwala Bagh Memorial, which commemorates the thousands of victims of a mass shooting by members of the British Indian Army, which took place in Amritsar in 1919. The incident and its aftermath are considered by historians to be a decisive step toward the end of British rule in India.

Before you enter the temple, you have to take off your shoes and deposit them, and wash your hands and feet. After we were all nice and clean, we watched the queue of thousands of people lining up to enter the temple. The smog in the air partially shrouding the temple added a level of mystique to the scene before us. It was absolutely beautiful. After admiring the view, and watching people bathe in the water between us and the temple, we made our way to the langar, or kitchen, where roughly 100,000 people are served per day, with between 2,000 and 3,000 visitors dining together inside the kitchen’s two dining halls for fifteen minutes at a time.
As we walked through the kitchen, we watched people make flatbreads, saw a machine that makes roti, and witnessed the cooks preparing massive vats of dal, which contain 500kg of lentils! The aroma was so potent. I couldn’t wait to eat!

After chatting with some of my fellow diners, we were served some maa ki dal, chickpea chole, a dessert called kheer, and flatbread. The dal was so delicious and flavorful! You can tell that it’s served and made with love, as Deepak said. Here, he says, there is no rank, no caste, no color, no religion here. Everyone is treated equally, which is how I believe the world should always be. Here, volunteers clean everything, from the floors to the dishes and utensils. This place is a bastion of love and positive energy. You can feel it the moment you walk in, and I couldn’t help but get emotional after having such a beautiful experience. Come to The Golden Temple. It will change your life.
