**Some History**
According to legend, the origins of Fumone date back to the time of Tarquinius the Superb (5th century BC) who would have taken refuge there after being driven from Rome.

We certainly know that, by virtue of its geographical location, it has performed an important function of controlling the territory since ancient times. In particular, during the Middle Ages, the Fumone hill became fundamental for the safety of Rome in times marked by Saracen and Norman incursions: 𝐢𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐦𝐨𝐤𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐞. 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝗙𝘂𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲 (𝐛𝐢𝐠 𝐬𝐦𝐨𝐤𝐞) 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐝, and the saying "When Fumone smokes, / the whole Campaign trembles".

In 1186 the Fumone Castle must defend itself from the siege of Henry VI but manages to keep up with it.

In 1295 Pope Celestine V was imprisoned in the Castle, who had renounced the pontificate, as he desired a simple life, and not as sumptuous and rich as that of the pope. Celestine V died on May 19, 1296, according to some assassinated at the behest of Boniface VIII, his successor.

The papal government, well aware of the importance of the small center, after entrusting it to various feudal lords, from the mid-thirteenth century maintained the most direct control over the Castle: only in the sixteenth century Fumone would reach municipal autonomy.

At the end of the seventeenth century the castle passed into the hands of the Marquis Longhi, who still own it.
