How does Putin view his enormous country and its status vis-à-vis its international competitors? What are Russia’s security concerns and how do they help to explain the invasion of Ukraine and the catastrophic Russo-Ukrainian War?

Professor Ronald Suny, the author of many books on Russia, the USSR, and the Caucasus, sheds light on the dynamics of Russia as a global actor at this tumultuous time, and its 20th-century precedents. Professor Suny is the William H. Sewell Jr. Distinguished University Professor of History and Professor of Political Science at the University of Michigan and Emeritus Professor of Political Science and History at the University of Chicago.
