Coronavirus: 19 deaths recorded in Alberta, Hinshaw asks for co-operation over holidays | FULL
Alberta’s chief medical officer of health used her final media availability before Christmas to plead to Albertans to follow provincial restrictions, while also wishing all residents the best over the holiday season.
Hinshaw announced that the province identified 1,301 new cases of COVID-19, while recording an additional 19 deaths associated to the novel coronavirus. There was an increase in hospital numbers as 821 patients with COVID-19 are in hospital and 146 of those are in intensive care.
Hinshaw also discussed Health Canada’s approval of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine and continued rollout of the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine. While it is positive news, Hinshaw does not expect the province to receive the new vaccine within the next couple of days as it continues to work with the federal government on procurement.
Hinshaw says officials are looking at the option of moving the vaccination program into long-term care facilities with the Moderna vaccine, but that depends on the final volume of vaccine the province receives.
