Do you leak urine when you cough/ sneeze?
Leak on cough/sneeze? Do this 👇
Why this happens (quick):
A sudden cough/sneeze spikes abdominal pressure. If the pelvic floor muscles (the hammock that supports the bladder + closes the urethra) are weak, tired, or poorly timed, that pressure wins → a little leak. Hormone shifts, childbirth, chronic coughing, constipation, and long sitting can all add up.
Why strengthen:
Training improves timing (reflex “shut the door” at the right moment) and support (better lift under load), so pressure from a cough/sneeze is less likely to push urine out.
1) THE KNACK (instant control)
Right before you cough/sneeze/laugh, gently pre-lift your pelvic floor muscles and exhale as you cough/sneeze. Quick lift = fewer leaks.
2) KEGELS (daily strength — one set/day)
How: “Lift as if to stop pee,” then gently lift inside. Breathe normally. Keep glutes & abs relaxed.
Set (shown): Hold 10 counts → release 10 counts, repeat ×5. (One set total.)
Position: Start sitting (or lying). Progress to standing when easy.
Progress (after 2–4 weeks, optional):
Build holds toward 8–10 seconds with calm breathing. Use The Knack before stairs, lifting, or a big laugh.
Avoid:
Practising while peeing, breath-holding, clenching butt/abs, or pushing down.
⚠️ Disclaimer: Kegels aren’t for everyone.
If you have a tight/overactive pelvic floor, don’t do Kegels—focus on relaxation and breathwork first. Signs can include pelvic pain, pain with intercourse, difficulty starting urine, feeling of incomplete emptying, constipation, or pelvic heaviness/pressure. See a pelvic floor physiotherapist/uro-gyn for assessment.
