How Sam McKnight Helped Invent Session Hair (Part 1)

Before the supermodels, before Princess Diana, and decades before the Chanel runways — there was a young Scottish hairdresser arriving in London in the 1970s.

Sam McKnight didn’t originally plan to work in fashion. He was training to become a teacher before discovering hairdressing and eventually moving to London, where he began working at Molton Brown on South Molton Street.

Just around the corner was British Vogue.

Through the salon he began working on early fashion shoots, and by 1977 he was already contributing to Vogue editorials. Within a few years he would leave the security of salon work entirely to focus on fashion images and editorials — helping define what we now call the session hairstylist.

This is Part 1 of my series exploring the career and influence of Sam McKnight.
