Soil amendments for dahlias 🦊🌸🦊
In the previous video I talked about how field tiling handles drainage from below.
These amendments work from above — building the kind of soil dahlias actually want to grow in.
Here’s what’s going down and why:
🦊Coast of Maine Lobster Compost — this is the magic for clay. Lobster shells are loaded with chitin, calcium, and trace minerals that feed soil microbes and slowly break up compacted clay. It improves structure, boosts drainage, and adds the kind of slow-release nutrition that synthetic fertilizers can’t replicate. Made right up the coast from us — Maine roots feeding New Hampshire blooms.
⚠️ A quick word on why I trust this compost — there’s a very real, well-documented issue in the gardening world called killer compost. Hay and grass grazed by livestock are sometimes treated with persistent broadleaf herbicides like aminopyralid, clopyralid, or picloram. These chemicals are designed to last. They don’t break down in the animal’s digestive tract — they pass straight through into the manure. And here’s the problem: the composting process doesn’t destroy them either. When contaminated manure hits your soil, the residues release and stunt, twist, or outright kill broadleaf plants. Dahlias are broadleaf. This is why I’m so particular about my compost sources — Coast of Maine’s lobster compost is marine-based, traceable, and safe.
🌸 Worm Castings — pure black gold. Castings are gentle, water-soluble, and won’t burn a single root. They’re packed with beneficial bacteria, enzymes, and plant-available nutrients in their most usable form. They improve soil structure, boost water retention without waterlogging, and introduce the microbial life that turns dirt into living soil. A little goes a long way.
🦊 Kelp Meal — cold-water seaweed packed with over 60 trace minerals, natural growth hormones (cytokinins and auxins), and plant-available potassium. It strengthens stems, improves bloom size, and helps plants handle stress. Dahlias love it.
🌸 Gypsum — the clay-buster. Calcium sulfate physically breaks apart heavy clay particles without changing the soil’s pH. It improves drainage, aeration, and root penetration. For heavy clay fields, it’s non-negotiable.
🦊 Blue Gold Super Carb + Heavy Duty Molasses soil drench — this one feeds the soil itself. The molasses is rocket fuel for beneficial microbes, and Blue Gold delivers a full spectrum of plant-available minerals and humic acids. Healthy microbes = healthy soil = healthy dahlias.
Field tiling drains the water. These amendments build the life.🫶🏻
