Episode 02: The Goal of Meditation

In this episode we are going to cover what is (or at least should be) the goal of meditation, and how to get there. Even though joy, happiness, and inner peace are certainly amazing states, it turns out that even these peak experiences are not the ultimate benefit of meditation. They tend to be transitory, and can get easily disrupted by sickness and/or other difficult life circumstances.

The ultimate goal of meditation is what is called Awakening. This is also known as Enlightenment, Liberation, or Self-Realization. All these refer to the same concept, a complete and lasting freedom from suffering, unaffected by aging, disease, or any other circumstances. Although pain and pleasure are an inevitable part of life, suffering and happiness are entirely optional. The choice is ours.

This episode is based on the book The Mind Illuminated: A Complete Meditation Guide Integrating Buddhist Wisdom and Brain Science for Greater Mindfulness by Culadasa (John Yates, PhD.).
