During a recent summer, unprecedented floods inundated China's Yangtze River and its tributaries, resulting from a combination of environmental degradation in its northeastern regions and global weather shifts, including the El Niño phenomenon. This led to widespread floods across Asia, impacting countries like Russia, the Koreas, Bangladesh, and India. The record-breaking rains lasted for two months, causing a flood situation comparable to the devastating 1954 flood that claimed 30,000 lives.
Management of the 3,900-mile-long Yangtze, the world's third-longest river, has historically been vital for China's survival and national development. Centuries of flood control efforts have included building some 40,000 km of embankments along the river and its tributaries. However, this summer's exceptional flooding overwhelmed even the most robust defenses.
Although some areas like Jiangxi, Fujian, Guangdong, Hunan, and Anhui are accustomed to annual floods, the sheer scale and reach of this flood were unprecedented, engulfing regions not typically prone to flooding. It exceeded previous record floods in 1931 and 1954, catching authorities unprepared and straining rescue efforts. This national crisis required the mobilization of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) for extensive flood-fighting operations.
