Indus Shield Alpha: PAF's Advanced JF-17 Block III Fighters Join Azerbaijan for Combat Training.
The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) has dispatched its advanced JF-17 Thunder Block III fighter jets to Azerbaijan for the joint air combat drill, "Indus Shield Alpha". The service conveyed the update through its official channels on Sunday.
The maneuver, taking place in Azerbaijan, convenes air and ground personnel from both nations for a rigorous aerial training session. The focus of the exercise is on contemporary aerial warfare tactics and operational cohesion. The PAF noted that the journey to Azerbaijan involved a continuous ferry flight from Pakistan, which was enabled by air-to-air refueling provided by a Pakistan Air Force IL-78 refueling aircraft.
In a communication issued by the service, the PAF highlighted that "in a notable display of operational proficiency and stamina, PAF fighter aircraft completed a non-stop flight, performing seamless in-flight air-to-air refuelling procedures". The service emphasized that the mid-air refueling demonstrated the JF-17 Block III's extended range capability and the crew's readiness to undertake prolonged international assignments.
The PAF characterized the deployment as a testament to its "professional excellence and readiness," highlighting the force’s increasing focus on strategic reach and interoperability with partner nations.
The Indus Shield Alpha maneuver is designed to enhance tactical coordination between the two air forces and bolster their capacity for conducting combined operations. The PAF indicated that the drill will "concentrate on modern aerial warfare tactics, joint mission planning, and execution," especially in situations shaped by rapid technological advancements and evolving airpower theory.
This collaborative effort also serves as a venue for exchanging operational insights and reinforcing a unified response to emerging regional and global air defense threats. The PAF stated that participation in Indus Shield Alpha strengthens its "lasting commitment to regional stability and international military cooperation".
The JF-17 Thunder Block III, a product of collaboration between Pakistan and China, comes equipped with sophisticated avionics, a KLJ-7A AESA radar, and augmented beyond-visual-range (BVR) combat abilities. The Block III variant represents the most up-to-date version of the platform currently in service with the Pakistan Air Force.
