Salvation & Redemption -- The Early Christian Understanding
Fr. Panayiotis discusses the early Christian understanding of Salvation (σωτηρία) and Redemption (λύτρωσις). In this presentation, Father discusses how Saint Paul viewed the chief enemies of humanity to be sin, death, and the Law of Moses. He continues with quotes from some of the church fathers, including St. Irenaeus of Lyons, St. Athanasius the Great, and St. Gregory of Nyssa, showing the Early Christian understanding of Salvation and redemption as a process of healing, enabled by the Incarnation of God in Christ. He concludes with the understanding that salvation is brought about as we unite ourselves to Christ, both spiritually in prayer -- by surrendering to His love and mercy -- as well as physically in His deified Body and Blood in the Holy Eucharist.
