Born for Adversity: The Life of St. Olympias the Deaconess

Saint Olympia the Deaconess (Greek: Ὀλυμπιάς) lived on Constantinople during the fourth century. After being widowed at a young age, she gave away her wealth and sought a life of chastity and piety. She had the fortune of being close friends with several men who would also become saints, such as Gregory of Nyssa, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom. Her good works included building a hospital, an orphanage and even looking after Monks who had been led in exile from Nitria. Although she is remembered as a model of service in the Church, this gift she returned to Christ only came through much adversity. Her feast day is commemorated by the Church on July 25th.
