These 8 tips will get your baby sleeping later every morning!
Tip 1 is to black out your baby's bedroom. Light is a very strong environmental cue that tells our brains to be awake. So the easiest thing you can do to get your baby sleeping better at night and later in the morning is to black out your baby's windows.
Tip 2 is to use white noise all night long! White noise has been proven to help people of all ages sleep deeper and longer. And the way that it works is it provides a low level background noise that prevents other noises from waking your baby, like a barking dog or an older sibling or the garbage truck at 5am.
Tip 3 is to find the ideal bedtime for your baby. Your baby's bedtime is so essential with them sleeping well at night and later in the morning. Babies have a natural sweet spot for bedtime and it typically falls between 6.30 and 7.30 pm which i know is probably way earlier than you thought your baby's bedtime should be. But trust me over the years I have discovered that when our babies can fall asleep between 6.30 to 7.30 every night, they sleep longer and later in the morning.
Tip 4 is to help your baby nap well. An overtired baby fights falling asleep at bedtime, wakes up more often at night and wakes up earlier in the morning. I know it seems crazy but I promise you I've seen it thousands of times. So in order to get your baby sleeping later in the morning you actually have to make sure that they nap well during the day, as well. Your 5 to 24 month old should nap for a total of two to three hours every day.
Tip 5: Start sleep training. The trouble with babies waking at 4 to 5 a.m is that it's much harder for them to fall back asleep at this hour. Remember this time of the night is characterized by the lightest sleeping, so you may find that your usual tricks of helping your baby fall asleep by feeding them rocking, holding, padding or shushing it just doesn't work at these dreadfully early hours, does it? And in fact your assistance might even backfire and energize your baby, which makes it impossible for them to fall back to sleep. Now if you'd like help sleep training your baby I have a program called "21 Days to Peace and Quiet" (link in the description).
Tip 6 is no fun before 6 a.m. If your little one gets used to fussing at five in the morning and getting to watch cartoons, then they'll probably start waking at 4 am and 3 am, maybe even 2 am and continuing to resist and cry until parents finally give in. The way to fix this though is to treat every waking before 6 am as a night waking. In my sleep training program "21 Days to Peace and Quiet" we have a rule. Any waking before 6 am is a night waking and should be treated accordingly. Instead keep your little one in their dark bedroom, having zero fun until 6 am and that will be the best way to encourage them to fall back asleep.
Tip 7: Avoid naps before 8 am. The problem with early naps is they reinforce early wakings, right? Your baby wakes up early in the morning takes early naps, has an early bedtime and the vicious cycle continues. If your baby's used to waking up at five in the morning and having their first nap at 7 am, what you want to do is slowly push that 7 am nap later by about 15 minutes every day or two, right? So 7.15 for a day or two, 7.30 for a day or two, 7.45 and then have the first nap sit at 8 am. And then move naps after that and bedtime accordingly.
Tip 8 is to wean off night feeds. Once your baby is older than 6 months ask their doctor if they're ready for night weaning. Once babies are developmentally ready to be weaned off of night feeds we find that they sleep through the night easier and they wake up later in the morning. If you would like to see my guide that helps you determine if your baby's ready for night weaning and how you can do it, check out the link in my description.
