Label REJECTED This Legend's CLASSIC 1989 Record...Ended Up SELLING 11 MILLION!--Professor of Rock

Coming up, an interview with one of the greatest guitarists of the rock era, Mike Campbell, from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, a band that ruled the landscape for over 4 decades. Mike tells the story of Full Moon Fever, an album that he helped write and produce with 2 other legends that they were sure would be a smash… Unfortunately, their label had no such belief. In fact, the album was flat-out rejected. But that didn’t stop another major record label from signing a secret contract with Tom Petty. And it turns out the label was dead wrong as Full Moon Fever became Petty’s biggest seller ever and churned out 3 #1 hits, including today’s feature Running Down a Dream. But this was during the time when Compact Discs were replacing records and tapes so the singer. Ever a traditionalist, Tom left a little message for the CD buyers. Also, the amazing solo fell out in one take... A great interview is coming up next on Professor of Rock.

It’s time for another edition of our series Revelations where artists give us exclusive behind-the-scenes experiences about their biggest songs and albums. Insight you won’t find anywhere else. Today we have something very special for you. it’s an in-depth interview with rock and roll hall of famer and co-writer, producer, and guitarist Tom Petty and the heartbreakers the great Mike Campbell. today we open the book on the 1989 Tom Petty album Full Moon Fever, his first solo album though all of the heartbreakers played on the record except stan LYNCH..

Tom Petty began to work with Electric Light Orchestra frontman, the legendary Jeff Lynne the album we tentatively call the album songs from the garage. Jeff Lynne would bring a different approach to the band and recording… Lynne would direct the band members and tell them exactly what to play. Their previous collaboratively creative method of arrangement was not needed. Jeff Lynne having years of productions under his belt new exactly what he wanted and needed for this particular record.

He knew the studio inside and out and worked to get the album’s engaging sound… His unique style was to record individual multiple-layered instrumental parts in order to avoid any sonic bleed though with one vocal line at the top without much reverb at all added to the mix. He wanted to bring Tom Petty’s distinct voice to the front of the songs so that it was wholly recognizable

Part of what connected Jeff Lynne to Tom Petty was their love of Del Shannon and Roy Orbison. In fact, Jeff Lynne would say in Warren Zane's excellent Tom Petty Biography that both Del Shannon And Roy Orbison’s voices had a plaintiveness with sadness in some way, like there’s a story in there… I Love that.

Jeff Lynne would discover the same thing in Tom Petty,...
