The spoils system or the patronage system in the United States was damaging the American institutions. US president Jame A. Garfield tried to end the spoils system but lost his life at the hands of a stalwart Charles Guiteau. Then the sinking of the USS Maine triggered a conflict between Spain and the United States. This crisis ended with the independence of Cuba while America took control of the Philippines, Guam, and Puertorico.
