Queen vs King & Pawn Endgame (7th Rank Pawn) - Endgame-16, 100 Endgames Every Chess Player Must Know

Namaste! Everyone

Welcome to our endgame series, this is game-16, In the previous endgame, we learned that the queen is sufficient to win the endgame when the pawn has not reached the 7th Rank and the King the Queen together were able to win the endgame even when the pawn was a rook pawn.

If you have not yet studied the queen vs pawn endgames, start with endgame-15 and come back to this pawn, That will give you better appreciation of the endgames we will analyse in this video.

As you can see we have this position where the pawn is on the 7th rank and its a 'b' pawn. The pawn is supported by the king and is ready to advance to promote itself to a queen. 7th rank pawn vs queen endgames are highly nuanced and you will be so much happy after learning these endgames.

As always the defending king is away from the action to make the position as tough as possible and the queen is on h8. white to play - If you already know this endgame or want to try yourself, pause the video, set up the position and analyse for your own sake to solve the position and then come back to this video.

So, white has to prevent the black from advancing the pawn, the pawn will be promoted to the queen if the black is allowed a single move. White queen must keep checking the black king to somehow make progress in this position.

So 1. Qh7+ kc1 because if the king does not control the b1 square the queen will occupy that square and the pawn will not be able to advance, white will then easily bring his king close to the pawn and the pawn will be lost.
so 1. ...Kc1 2. Qh1+ again checking the king, Kc2 again. 3. Qe4+ Kc1 4. Qc4+ Kd1 5. Qb3+ Kc1 6. Qc3+ now if the king moves to the d-file the pawn will be lost. So king has to go under the pawn and this will give us one move to bring the white king closure to the pawn. 6. ...kb1 7. Kf6 ka2 8. Qc2 pinning the pawn and not allowing the pawn to advance, 8... ka1 only move. 9. Qa4+ Kb1 10. Ke5 now we can again bring the white king closer. 10.....Kc1 11. Qc4+ Kd1 12. Qb3+ Kc1 13. Qc3+ Kb1 this is again the same maneuver that will allow our king to move one more square closer to the pawn. 14. Kd4

Now if 14. ...ka2 15. Qc2 Ka1 16. Qa4+ Kb1 17. Kc3 kc1 18. Qc2# will be checkmate.

if 14. ...Ka1 15. Ka5+ kb1 16. kd3 kc1 only move and 17. Qe1# again will be checkmate.

or the king will abandon the pawn somewhere along the way then it will be lone king vs queen and king endgame, which will be easily winning.

if your guys want, We can make a video on that separately.

So same is the fate when the pawn is on the 'd' and 'e' files. also the g file pawn endgame is exactly the same. You can try to win them yourself.

Now we enter the more trickier part of this endgame. the Rook's Pawn and the Bishop's Pawn. Which we will learn in next two endgames.

So do use these ideas in your own endgames and win games.
