The Rook vs Knight Endgame (In the corner) - Endgame-9, 100 Endgames Every Chess Player Must Know

Namaste! Everyone

Welcome to an Endgame Series, where we will be leaning 100 most important Endgame every Chess player must know by heart to improve at chess and become a good player.

Welcome to our Rook and Knight endgame.

We have studied Rook vs Knight endgames where the king the night were trapped on the last rank that is at the edge of the board.

What if the king and the knight are trapped in the corner, So we will see 3 position in this game.

These positions do not need much analysis and just by looking at the position we can see that the knight will be lost immediately and defending side will be lost.

For example, in this position, Knight is on the h1 square and the king is on g1, no move will save this game as the king can not move and if the knight moves it will be captured on the next move.

again in this position, Black king is under check but after kf3, the night will be lost and if the king moves, it will be checkmate.

More interesting is this position, where the night is not in the corner or on the edge but on g2 square and still white will be able to capture it on the next 2 moves.

So the Rook vs Night game is winning if the night and king are trapped in a corner, even if knight is on g2.

Now, we will analyse a real example from Mtel Masters in 2006 between Gata Kamsky and Etienne Bacrot., where a thrilling rook vs knight endgame was played out beautifully.
