Since Thomas Tuchel took over at Chelsea, the blues have undoubtedly been one of the most impressive sides in Europe and they’ve shown that by coasting through to the Champions League final after beating Zidane’s Real Madrid 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.
So let’s take a look at how Tuchel sets his side up and why we should see Chelsea as title contenders next season. Tuchel has largely set Chelsea up in a 3-4-2-1. This has been the shape that we’ve gotten used to watching the Blues in but the German has started to implement a 3-5-2 as well as more of an attacking option with only one defensive midfielder, but more on this later on. As we mentioned, Chelsea look to dominate the ball.

They play out from the back using short passes to recycle the ball amongst their back three and defensive midfielders. This shape makes them very difficult to press as the base five, plus the goalkeeper, are difficult to outnumber, especially with the midfielders playing behind the opposition strikers who press the back three. Not only does this tend to leave an outball to one of the midfielders, but the width offered by the wing backs means that there’s usually a pass out wide that’s on too. And if these options aren’t on, Chelsea have the numbers and the patience to recycle the ball and try to play through from a different angle.
There are several common themes in Chelsea’s build up under Tuchel but there are three that stand out the most. The first is the simple pass into the defensive midfielders who turn and progress the play further.
The second are longer, switched passes from a centre back or defensive midfielder to the opposite side wing back. And the third is a pass directly into the attacking unit, often with an outside centre back carrying out of defence and playing the pass.

So to conclude, I think Chelsea will be title challengers next season because: Their evolution under Tuchel from the 3-4-2-1 to the 3-5-2 offers even more control in midfield. Whilst the solo DM invites pressure from the opposition, creating space higher up the pitch to attack with direct passes. But the back three shapes are very interchangeable and given Tuchel’s tendency to tinker, we’ll see all three shapes used depending on the situation.
The shapes also get the best out of Chelsea’s squad, who’ve been taught at academy level to play in a back three and the leftovers from Antonio Conte’s title winners all played in the 3-4-2-1 but I expect the main players to benefit being Pulisic, Havertz and Werner.
What’s more is Romelu Lukaku could slot in seamlessly, adding more goals as well as a physical, complete forward. And given the reports that Inter need to sell to bail out their owners, Lukaku will be up for sale.
