A Misspelled Word LED to This Band SINGING The WRONG LYRIC… Made it a #1 Smash! | Professor of Rock

Here’s one for ya… Today’s song Venus by Shocking Blue was written in a different language… When it was translated to English, guitarist Robbie van Leeuwen wrote down the opening line incorrectly… However, the singer who recorded it, Mariska Veres spoke only Dutch so she sang the lyric wrong. The typo changed how the word was sung… which became very confusing since the word that was sung hadn’t been used since the 1500s. But nobody caught it until after it was released…It wouldn’t matter… Venus hit #1… In fact, it hit #1 twice… in two different decades…the 70s and the 80s by 2 different bands, Shocking Blue and Bananarama, and would become the only song title in history to hit #1 3 different times… Up next, the incredible back story of this irresistible smash Venus and the skinny behind both #1 hit versions that have dazzled multiple generations of music fans including the hilarious mispronounced lyric! Next on Professor of Rock.

Hey, let's talk about “Venus,” an addictive pop music narcotic originated by the Dutch quartet Shocking Blue. Well, it's not just your typical catchy tune. Like all the classic hits of the Rock Era, there’s a colorful story behind it. “Venus,” the Roman goddess of love, beauty, and desire, has been used as a song title with phenomenal success. Singles with the title of “Venus” have hit the #1 position on the Billboard Hot 100 three times.

The first single to achieve that feat was Ed Marshall’s composition “Venus,” performed by teen idol Frankie Avalon’s in 1959. It happened for the 2nd time in February 1970 with Shocking Blue’s “Venus,” and a third time with Bananarama’s remake of Shocking Blue’s Venus in September, ’86: Robbie Van Leeuwen (lee-wun) was the man who put Shocking Blue together in The Hague (rhymes with leg), the Netherlands in ’67. He was the lead guitarist in a group named The Motions prior to that. The Motions earned the distinction of being the first Nederbeat band to garner success on the Dutch singles chart when they scored with “Wasted Words.”
Nederbeat was the term used to describe the boom of the rock scene in that country that was influenced by the British Invasion of the Beatles, the Stones, and the Kinks.

Robbie left the Motions to form his own band, assembling what became Shocking Blue. At first, Shocking Blue was very much a garage rock band that followed the psychedelic, hippie fad of the late 60s. The band showed some promise with a couple of mild hits in the Netherlands, but Robbie, who was also a talented songwriter, had bigger aspirations. Like many European musicians in the 60s, he had his sights on having a hit in America. He knew that they needed to change the sound of the band to something…more melodic, more mass appeal.

So, here's what happened…
