(a) When Franz wondered whether they would make even the pigeons sing in German, he meant that they had grown up using French as their language. Now, taking it away from them would be unfair and unkind. The language was as natural to them as cooing is to the pigeons. Robbing them of it and forcing German on them would be not only difficult but next to impossible. (b) It is difficult for people to accept a language which is imposed on them. French was their mother tongue and they were comfortable using it as their own. It would not be easy to switch to a different language. (c) Language is a tool for communication. Adopting a new language causes pain and discomfort. It was not going to be easy for them to adapt to the new situation—and adopt German that was forced on to them. Moreover, they identified with the French language. It was a factor that helped them bond with their fellow brethren.

WHY WAS FRANZ SURPRISED TO SEE MR.HAMEL THAT DAY?
M Hamel was dressed in his special suit which comprised his beautiful green coat, frilled shirt and a little black silk cap, all embroidered because it was the last lesson that he would deliver. He never wore this attire except on inspection and prize days

Ans:- Franz didn’t at all like his books he had no interest in learning his lessons. Instead he thought of running away and spending the day out of the doors in a much cheerful way. It was bright and lovely day. The birds were chirping. The Prussian soldiers were drilling in the open field. Watching them seemed for more tempting than the rule for participles.
How did Franz’s feelings about M Hamel and school change?
Answer:
Franz was shocked when M Hamel told the students about the order from Berlin and that it was their last French lesson. He forgot about his teacher’s ruler and crankiness; instead, he started liking M Hamel, as he was being separated from him forever.
His feelings towards his school changed, as he did not want to give up his books and lessons, seemingly old friends.

Why did m.Hamel write vive LA France on tha blackboard?
M Hamel was saddened by the fact that German language was imposed on to the French people. The phrase vive LA France means long live France. He respected his country and also described French as the most beautiful language of all the languages in the world. He requested his students to safeguard their language from foreign influence as it would serve as a key to freedom of their slavery. lHe knew that there would be no teaching of French from the next day. So by this phrase he showed his affection towards his country.
What was the mood in the classroom when M Hamel gave his last French lesson?
The entire class was very sad. M. Hamel’s announcement struck Franz like a thunder and lightning. M. Hamel had taught the people of Alsace fir forty years. He had become an integral part of their life. All the young and the old had come to attend his last class to show their respect to him. There were tears in the elderly people. They tried to learn as much as they could from their beloved teacher. Most of them were feeling quite patriotic and regretful for neglecting learning their mother tongue.
