The West cannot allow ‘most strategic areas to be locked into China’

Former UK Conservative Party leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith says from the coronavirus crisis the free world recognises the “deep threat that is now posed to us by our dependency on China”.

It comes as UK Prime Minister has buckled to a “rebellion” within his Conservative Party and decided to reverse the decision on Huawei and ban the Chinese telecommunications company from the country’s 5G rollout.

Sir Iain said the UK has had a “real nightmare” with regard to Huawei given it has already been involved in the country’s 3G and 4G rollout.

He said of Victoria’s subscription to China’s Belt and Road Initiative that it serves only one purpose which is to “make those who are party to it become very dependent on China”.

Victoria has confirmed it will push ahead with its plan to sign up to China’s US$1.4 trillion infrastructure program.

Sir Iain told Sky News host Peta Credlin it is time the west looked at Belt and Road carefully and “decided that we cannot allow our most strategic areas to be locked into China”.
