The Painting Exercise I Wish I Knew as a BEGINNER

This monochromatic master copy is a great exercise to help you move from drawing to painting with more ease and more confidence.
First, the material : it’s a master copy, so you’re going to need a model. This time, I chose a portrait by Raphael that I cut from an art magazine. If you can get your hands on old art magazines, you’re in luck because the reproductions in there are usually much better than what an average printer can do. Choose whatever image you like and think is the right difficulty for your level. Next, we need paint but only enough for a grisaille, ie monochromatic black and white palette so it’s fairly simple: I’m using raw umber, mars black and titanium white. Then, we need a small painting surface for our study, this time I’m painting on a simple mdf panel primed with gesso. A couple of brushes of various shapes and sizes and we’re good to go.

This exercise can be segmented in three parts which are the following : block-in with paint / cover the canvas / refine edges.
