Sometimes, you just need to change everything - Oil Painting Process - Time Lapse and Commentary

If someone tries to x-ray this painting one day, they will find a completely different picture underneath, a picture that’s actually not even oriented the same way.

Sometimes you just have to start over and change everything.

It’s not that I abandoned the first idea, this nightscape… some elements are still present: the stars, the moon, the ambiguity between the calm and the chaos but, in reality, I was not happy with how it was going and I realized it had to be more about the human figure, it had to be more existential. So, after a couple of months of hesitation, I finally decided to it pick it up again and paint over it.

It’s my fault really, I don’t do a lot of prep work, I jump straight into the painting, sometimes not really knowing where it will take me so I have to embrace the use of pentimenti. And I do a lot of them, I frequently modify big parts of my paintings. This is the most ambitious pentimento I did so far.

I don’t have regrets, even though the word pentimento literally means “repentance”, I consider the first attempt as part of the evolution of this painting. It had to exist and fail to exist for the final painting to become something.

This entire piece is about seeing through the layers of reality, it’s about the invisible part of our existence, about the breaking point when “in me” and in “front of me” loose their meaning. It’s about hope, love, and what it means to exist through someone else.
