American Bandstand 1979 – ABC, The Jackson 5
We’re goin’ hoppin’…….So after the 60’s, according to Wikipedia, there was a decade called “the 70’s”….Dyn-o-mite!
“ABC” was the second of the Jackson 5’s first 4 singles released that went to #1, the other 3 being “I Want You Back”, “The Love You Save” and “I’ll Be There”.
On Feb 21, 1970, The Jackson 5 appeared on American Bandstand for the first time and sang “ABC” 3 days before it was even released as a single (this performance is posted in several places on YouTube). Today the Jackson 5, now called The Jacksons due to a legal dispute after they left Motown in 1975 and with Randy replacing Jermaine, return to promote their new album “Destiny”. “Destiny” would go on to sell 4 million copies worldwide. In August, Michael Jackson will release his 5th solo album “Off The Wall” which would sell 20 million copies, leading to the “true” beginning of Michael’s incredible solo career.
Dancers: I’m a bit outside of my wheelhouse here, but I believe (from watching ABdancers videos) at 3:55 you see Jo Ann Orgel, who holds the record for the longest stint on Bandstand at 10 1/2 years, dancing from 1976-1986.
……And I added the commercials to get a sense of the times. I cheated just a little as they were taken from last night’s ABC Friday Night Movie “Heroes of Rock and Roll”. “Superman: The Movie” is still #1 at the box office this week and those are the shows (promoted by the great voice actor Ernie Anderson) that are on tonight and tomorrow night on ABC…..We’re The One!
Airdate: February 10, 1979
