Finland, the home of Santa Claus, celebrated the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations with Korea this year. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1973, the two countries have cooperated and exchanged in various fields. “Diplomat Talks - Nuri's Day of Diplomacy,” is a series showing Nuri’s on-the-ground coverage of diplomacy. This week, she interviewed Finnish Ambassador to Korea Pekka Metso and Korean Ambassador to Finland Kim Jung-ha to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Ambassador Pekka Metso, who reviewed the diplomatic history of the two countries, said the bilateral relationship deepened with the opening of direct flights in 2008. Ambassador Kim Jung-ha said there was a special relationship between the two countries even before the establishment of diplomatic relations, talking about Professor Ramstedt, a Finnish linguist who wrote the world's first Korean grammar book in English during the Japanese colonial period. Meanwhile, Ambassador Pekka Metso mentioned that Finland is “Santa’s hometown”, and delivered a Christmas message to the citizens of both countries together with Ambassador Kim Jung-ha.

‘산타클로스의 고향’ 핀란드가 한국과의 수교 50주년을 맞이했다. 1973년 수교 이후 양국은 다양한 분야에서 협력하고 교류해왔다. 나누리 피디가 발로 뛰며 알아본 다양한 외교가 소식을 전하는 ‘디플로맷 토크 – 나누리 피디의 매우 외교적인 하루’. 이번 주에는 나피디가 한-핀란드 수교 50주년을 기념하며 뻬까 메쪼 주한 핀란드 대사와 김정하 주핀란드 한국대사를 함께 인터뷰했다. 양국 외교사를 되짚어본 뻬까 메쪼 대사는 2008년 양국 간 직항 항공편이 개설되면서 양국 관계가 더욱 깊어지게 됐다고 말했다. 김정하 대사는 수교 이전에도 양국에 특별한 인연이 있었다면서, 일제강점기 당시 세계 최초로 영문 한국어 문법 책을 집필한 핀란드인 언어학자 람스테트 교수에 대해 설명했다. 한편 뻬까 메쪼 대사는 핀란드에 ‘산타클로스의 고향’이 있다는 점을 언급하면서, 김정하 대사와 함께 양국 시민들에게 크리스마스 메시지를 전했다.
