Controversy over the euthanasia of dogs by a South Korean animal rights group 충격적인 유기동물 안락사 사건, 우리는 반려동물과 어떻게 공존해야 할까?

Public outrage has been sparked here in South Korea, following allegations that the country's largest animal rights group 'CARE' had secretly euthanized around 200 dogs under its care. An estimated 100,000 pet animals are abandoned in South Korea every year, with around half of them living out the rest of their lives in pet shelters. Despite the adoption of a pet registration system in South Korea in 2014, the number of homeless pets have risen in every year since then, with some critics saying the ease of the pet adoption process in the country, and a lack of awareness on a pet owner's responsibility, are contributing to this phenomenon. In this week's edition of "Foreign Correspondents", we sit down with our panel of journalists to talk about these various issues regarding pet animals.

최근 한 유명 동물권 단체가 국민들의 비난을 사고 있다. 동물권 단체 '케어'의 박소연 대표가 구조된 유기동물 200여 마리를 몰래 안락사 시켰다는 사실이 폭로되면서 언론에서는 연일 이 사건을 집중적으로 보도했다. 한 해 한국에서 버려지는 반려동물은 10만 마리 정도. 이 중 절반이 보호소에서 생을 마감하는 것으로 추산된다. 2014년부터 마이크로 칩 등을 이용해 반려동물과 그 소유자의 정보를 등록해두는 '반려동물등록제'가 시행되고 있지만 잃어버리거나 버려지는 반려동물의 수는 2014년 이후 꾸준히 증가했다. 일각에서는 반려동물 입양 절차가 너무 쉽다는 점을 반려동물 유기가 늘어나는 이유로 꼽기도 한다. 그런가 하면, 반려동물에 대한 사전지식 없이 동물을 키우기 시작하는 것도 문제점으로 지적되는데... 이번 주 에선 반려동물 입양부터 양육, 그리고 반려동물 유기 문제까지 '반려동물'을 주제로 다양한 이야기를 나눠본다.
