Which Akai MPC Should You Buy?

https://computefunction.bandcamp.com/

There are lots to choose from. Akai MPC 60, 60ii, 3000, 3000le, 2000, 2000xl, 4000, 500, 1000, 2500, 5000 and of course the new Live and X.

I've had all the vintage MPCs except for the 500 and the 4000. I know some people say that the 4k is the best made and should be considered Akai's crowning achievement. Since I've never used it I can't really weight in, but after using the Live I doubt I would ever go back in time.

The 2000 classic had the best pads of all the MPCs I've owned. But that was really the only thing great about it for me. The file management wasn't fun at all and the sound was flat to me. Not in a good way either.

The XL came along and all these years later is the easiest and most inexpensive retro MPC to upgrade with USB drives, fat pads, individual outputs, newer better screens, faceplate stickers, and all kinds of cool stuff from MPCStuff.com. (no they aren't sponsoring me!)

The 1000 and 2500 are amazing and I like them much better than the XL. You can hook them up to your computer via USB and file management becomes a dream. It's fast and it's drag and drop. Booya! And JJOS makes them both way better too. The pads kinda suck but the overall build quality is amazing.

The 60 is in a class of it's own but my god the file management and chopping and loading takes FOREVER! But the layout, the pads, the 12 bit sound and that magical sequencer is very seductive. Sadly for me having NO filters at all broke the deal. It is just too limited for me. Marlow Diggs on the other hand though is the kind of musician who can use the 60 to it's full potential. I think he gets kinda tired of how tedious it is to work with though. I see him on his X and Live often.

So whether or not 12 bit or 16 bit is best, or which vintage sampler is best is a conversation that could go on forever. But the way I see it, there's nothing any of the classic MPCs can do for me that the Live can't. And the Live can go way beyond what any of them can.
