Anatomy of Torture: Torment as a Tool of the Spanish Inquisition

Professor Ron Hassner's new book, Anatomy of Torture, studies how the Spanish Inquisition used torture as a tool to extract information from their prisoners. Torture was used to force victims to divulge crucial and truthful information that they would not otherwise have revealed. It was not an end in itself. His research focuses mainly on 16th Century cases in Cuidad Real and Toledo in Spain, and in Mexico City. Professor Hassner will discuss the sources he used and comment on their reliability.

Ron Hassner is the Chancellor's Professor of Political Science and Helen Diller Family Chair in Israel Studies at the University of California Berkeley. He is also the faculty director of the Berkeley Institute for Jewish Law and Israel Studies and is the editor of the Cornell University Press book series “Religion and Conflict.” Prof. Hassner studies the role of ideas, practices, and symbols in international security with particular attention to the relationship between religion and violence. 'Anatomy of Torture' was published in 2022 by Cornell University Press. https://www.cornellpress.cornell.edu/book/9781501762031/anatomy-of-torture/
