Sephardim in Romania

Romania is quietly important to Sephardic history. Moses Gaster, one of the most illustrious Hahamim in London came from Romania, as did the Halfon banking family, connected through business and marriage to the Camondos, Rothschilds, Lazards, Morpurgos, and others. The Jewish history of Romania tends to focus on the larger Ashkenazi community. Felicia Waldman gave an informative talk at the IAJGS London conference, and we are delighted to welcome her to speak at Sephardic World on Romania's Sephardim.

Felicia Waldman is an associate professor at the Center for Hebrew Studies, Faculty of Letters, University of Bucharest. She coordinates the Center and the Goldstein Goren MA program in Hebrew Culture and Civilization. She has published four books, including Tales and Traces of Sephardic Bucharest, as well as over fifty articles and co-edited four volumes. She is Deputy Head of the Romanian Delegation to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, member and former Chair of the organization’s Education Working Group and member of its Committee on the Roma Genocide
