What To Watch Out For This Virus Season
VIRUS WRAP
Well, it's a good time to dust off the hand sanitiser, because virus season has arrived. But there's more than just one, or even two viruses experts are keeping an eye on. Yeah, it might feel like it's viruses galore out there at the moment and with the weather getting colder, it's just the beginning. So let's start with one we know quite well: Influenza. And this year, experts reckon it's started even earlier than normal. Now, on top of the Flu, we have a new family on the block, a big family of fresh COVID Variants nicknamed FLiRT. But there's nothing all that flirty about it. And finally, there's another virus making headlines right now: Bird Flu. True to it's name, it's spread among wild birds but it can spread to humans too. In fact, Australia just recorded its first-ever human case of the virus. But experts say not to worry too much because it's been contained. So with all of these viruses out there, how do we keep ourselves safe? As well as keeping up with flu and COVID vaccines, experts say we should wash our hands regularly, keep away from people who are sick, and if you are sick, cover that cough and keep away from others!
UK ELECTION
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has called a surprise general election! It means the United Kingdom will head to the polls on the 4th of July, six months earlier than expected! Mr Sunak's Conservative party will be up against Sir Keir Starmer's Labour party.
VOLUNTEER WEEK
This week is National Volunteer Week, which is all about celebrating the hard work and dedication of volunteers around the country. So, Amelia caught up with some young volunteers who help out at a community cafe.
BRISBANE LIONS BALLET
First up, to Brisbane, where Queensland Ballet is putting on an adaptation of Coppélia, a ballet from the 1870s, with an Australian twist. To help their dancers look the part, they asked the Brisbane Lions to come in to give them some tips.
MULLET STUDY
Now to a study on Mullets. Yes. The ABC has just released a very hard-hitting report, analysing the head shots of all 788 AFL players across 18 teams. And they found that 150 of them had mullets! It found that younger players were more likely to don the cut, with Western Bulldogs taking home the chocolates for having the highest percentage of players with mullets. Do with that information what you will.
MARY FOWLER BARBIE
And finally, to Matilda's star Mary Fowler, who's just been turned into a Barbie! She's joining 8 other athletes, including tennis legend Venus Williams, who are also getting their own dolls.
