Historic never before broadcast 1927 Launch Film of the Great Lakes steamship S.T. CRAPO at Detroit
This never before broadcast home movie of the 1927 launching of the Great Lakes Steamship S.T. Crapo was given to me specifically to be shown on my YouTube site. The great granddaughter of Stanford T. Crapo, Sally Bullard, found this near century-old movie film in her grandmother's attic. She had it digitized and then went looking for a way to share it on the Internet. She eventually contacted me. We agreed on my editing and formatting the original in order to present it here.
Of course, the film is silent and was shot with a windup movie camera, so all of the motion was about 48% too fast. I had a utility that allowed me to make the motion look more natural. I tried sharpening the images, but that lessened the overall quality. Additionally, the original film was in short spools, so when it was all put together, some of it was out of sequence and that too had to be fixed. Likewise, the silent aspect of it was a bit dull, so I added some of my own narration. After watching it several times I was able to pick out a lot of little details and pass them on to you.
This is only part one. Part two is a family trip aboard the Crapo through the Soo locks. I'm still researching that one, which will be a bit shorter than this video. When I do post it, the link will be seen below.
Meanwhile here are my other Huron Cement and S.T. Crapo videos...
