How to Identify Sheperd's Purse - Wild Edible Plant Identification

Hey guys in this video we talk about how to identify a common wild edible known as Sheperds Purse. The Latin name of this plant is Capsella bursa-pastoris. This wild edible is frequently found in poor soils around lawns, gardens, and driveways. There are several features of this plant to look for, especially depending upon which season you find it. In the early spring this plant has a basal rosette of leaves that are deeply incised with lobes. Some guides describe them as Dandelion like in appearance but we discuss how different they look from each other. The second type of leaf can be found along the upper portions of the stem. They are thin and narrow and clasp around the stem, meaning they have no leaf stem that attaches them. The distinct heart shaped seedpods are a unique feature of this plant and usually appear from mid April to mid May. This plant has a couple edible parts. The leaves are edible raw and are a great addition to salads as they add a nice peppery flavor. The seedpods can also be used in place of black pepper, or used in soups, stews, salads, or stir fry. This a great wild edible plant to learn because it is so safe and there are no toxic look a likes in the U.S. to my knowledge.
