On Friday, May 20, Germany was hit by a severe storm called Emmelinde.
This storm caused several tornadoes in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
One of the tornadoes hit the city of Paderborn and caused significant damage.
The tornado destroyed the roofs of buildings, knocked down trees and overturned cars.
About 40 people were injured.
According to the police, traffic is severely hampered, paths and parks are closed.
Authorities have asked residents to stay at home as many dangerous places remain and rescue work continues.
The tornado also hit the nearby city of Lippstadt.
More than 100 people were temporarily trapped in a local outdoor pool after fallen trees blocked the exit.
"The city has been hit hard," the Lippstadt fire department said.
On Friday, most of northern Germany was under a maximum level 3 threat due to severe storms.
Meteorologists said the extreme weather was caused by hot air from Africa meeting cold air from northern Europe.
In Germany, about 30 tornadoes are recorded per year.
