Ein Gedi is Probably our number 1 nature hike in Israel we keep returning year by year and never get tired of this absolutely stunning nature reserve. Ein Gedi is the perfect site if you love walking in nature, wildlife, water pools, biblical history, desert views, and a bit of a challenge.
Ein Gedi is in the Judean desert about one hour drive from Jerusalem, at an elevation of 400 meters below sea level, so expect warm weather and lots of sunshine. That is why we always try to visit in the winter season when it's cooler. During the cooler months, one can climb to the higher levels of the park and visit Dodim cave and the Chalcolithic temple. If you arrive early in the morning you have a better chance to see the local wild goats - the Nubian Ibex walking freely on the steep cliffs. Ein Gedi's biggest attraction is the freshwater streams flowing down the wadi, creating cool pools, waterfalls, and relaxing resting spots.

It always amazes me how the biblical description of Ein Gedi hasn't changed since this event took place 3 thousand years ago. The desert, the cliffs, the wild goats, the cave, and even the exact name of the oasis that hasn't changed !!
